• Burmester eagles 18, one behind Oosthuizen

Dean Burmester grabbed his share of the headlines after a slam-dunk eagle on the 18th hole to end a rollercoaster first round in Major golf.

The multiple Sunshine Tour winner is making his Major debut at the US Open this week and will no doubt remember his first 18 holes after a special ending. Known for his length off the tee, the South African had commentators in awe of his 411 yard drive but little did they know what was next.

Burmester’s eagle helped undo some of the early damage. After going out in +3, he made his first birdie of the day at the 10th. That was undone by drops at 11 and 13 before a triple on the 14 saw him freewheel down the leaderboard.

A four at the 16th helped his confidence but he immediately handed that back on the next to stand on the 18th tee at +7.

    SA scores after round one:

    Louis Oosthuizen +4

    Dean Burmester +5

    Branden Grace +6

    Ernie Els, Dylan Frittelli +8

    Charl Schwartzel +9
