The need for four captain’s picks for the US team is likely to be shrunk to three with Tiger Woods likely to play the Presidents Cup.

Time is running out for hopefuls to impress the captain, and after he shook off some rust in Japan on Monday, the 15-time Major champion appeared to hint at a playing role in the match against Ernie Els’ Internationals at Royal Melbourne.

‘I’ve been pretty consumed by it,’ said Woods about his role as skipper of the US team.

‘It made me more hopeful that I could play this week, play Hero and play Australia. The way I was feeling towards the middle part of the year, it was going to be a tall order to be able to do it all.’

Woods will be part of the field for the PGA Tour’s inaugural Zozo Championship, the second $9.75-million tournament in the three-week Asia run.

The veteran golfer has already earmarked a return to Japan when golf makes another appearance at the Olympics.

‘I would love to play in an Olympic Games,’ he said.

‘It would be an honour to represent my country in an Olympic Games. Hopefully next year I can have a good year and qualify.’
