Harold Varner III, Tom Hoge and Roger Sloan are the early leaders at the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina after Thursday’s opening round.

The trio made for an excellent start to their hopes of challenging for a victory by carding opening rounds of 62, which left them eight under par at the end of play.

As a result they will head into the second round on Friday with a decent two-shot lead over American Harris English, who opened his account with a 64.

It was, however, a slow start for the South Africans in the field with Dylan Frittelli the only one to manage a round lower than par.

The 30-year-old had a difficult start to his round that saw him make three drop shots on the front nine to which he fortunately recovered by rolling in three birdies as he came home for a one-under-par 69.

Charl Schwartzel’s round, though, was almost the other way around after making a brilliant start with four birdies on the opening five holes.

But, a bogey on the seventh and three more on the back nine saw him drop back to even par for his opening round.

Branden Grace’s return to action only yielded a one-over par 71, while Christiaan Bezuidenhout was also on one over after 15 holes before bad weather forced a postponement of the opening round.
