Van Tonder, Ritchie set for WGC showdown

Daniel van Tonder and JC Ritchie will feature alongside the world’s best golfers at this week’s WGC-Workday Championship at the Concession Golf Club.

The first of the four World Golf Championships has a new venue in Florida for this year’s edition after it was moved from Mexico due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

And, a golden opportunity awaits the two Sunshine Tour stars, who will compete in arguably one of their biggest tests yet.

Van Tonder has been superb on South African soil since last year, claiming three victories in the Rise-Up Series before winning the Royal Swazi Open in October. Finishing second on the 2019-20 Sunshine Tour Order of Merit, Van Tonder secured his place for the week.

Ritchie, who has been competing on the Korn Ferry Tour in the USA, won last season’s Order of Merit, handing him a spot to tee off against the best in the business.

The pair will be joined by Louis Oosthuizen, Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Erik van Rooyen as the other South Africans in the field.

Van Rooyen delivered an incredible performance at last year’s event where he claimed a T3 finish, while Patrick Reed emerged victorious.

Bezuidenhout has made a decent start to his year so far with a couple of showings in the Middle East. Oosthuizen, on the other hand, finished in T11 at the Phoenix Open earlier this month.
