• R8-million reasons to smile for Bezuidenhout

    Tastes like victory

A trip to The Open in a few weeks, a rankings boost and R8 021 646 in prize money are just a few extras added onto Christiaan Bezuidenhout’s plate after his win in Spain.

The young South African finally knocked down the door on the European Tour – and in fine style too – as he entered the winner’s circle for the first time.

The triumph was a financially rewarding one as he leaves Valderrama with over R8-million (€500 000). There were a number of extra perks namely: a space at Royal Portrush for the year’s final Major and a rankings boost of roughly 130 places (provisionally 140th in the OWGR).

Bezuidenhout, who challenged last week in Germany before settling for a share of third at the BMW International, is the country’s third winner of the season after Louis Oosthuizen (SA Open) and Justin Harding (Qatar Open).

Countrymen George Coetzee finished with a 75 to share 26th place alongside Justin Walters and Richard Sterne. The trio banked €25 882 as the next best Saffas on display.

Dean Burmester dropped down to 39th after a closing 76. He banked €18 300 for his week’s work.
