England’s Sam Horsfield has taken a one-shot lead at the halfway mark of the Celtic Classic after a superb 64 on Friday at Celtic Manor.

Horsfield went ahead of overnight leader Thomas Pieters, thanks to great showing throughout his second round that saw him shoot seven under for the day.

On 11 under par, Horsfield will be just ahead of Pieters, who could only manage a 68 on Friday with quite a number of players in contention at the top of the leaderboard.

It was, however, another difficult day for a number of the South Africans in the field with Compleat Golfer’s playing editor Brandon Stone, Jbe Kruger, Bryce Easton, Zander Lombard, JC Ritchie and Haydn Porteous all missing the cut, which was set at 1 under par.

After his excellent performance at last week’s English Championship, Wilco Nienaber will once again lead the local charge into the weekend on five under par after his second-round 67.

Nienaber made a slow start on Thursday but was more consistent throughout his second round, which yielded a four under for the day.

Dean Burmester, Louis de Jager and Justin Walters also did well to remain in with a shot but will start Saturday’s third round seven shots behind the leader on three under.

Justin Harding will get under way on two under par, while Jacques Kruyswijk is a further stroke behind on one under.
