Rory McIlroy finished strongly to deny South Africa’s rising star Justin Harding a famous match play at the WGC-Dell Tech Match Play on Thursday.

The South African never led in the match, but made the turn level after his win at the ninth hole. That first hole win wasn’t without birdies early on, but each was matched by the four-time Major champion.

Harding crucially missed a short putt for the lead at the 11th, of which McIlroy took full advantage. An eagle on the next, and a birdie, eagle run was enough to close out the match 3&2.

‘I needed to play well today to beat Justin,’ said McIlroy after maintaining his perfect record.

‘He’s a very good player. I can see why he’s done well so far at the start of the year and just happy to get the win.’

McIlroy will advance to the knockout round with a half or win over Matt Fitzpatrick.

Harding faces Luke List, who beat the Englishman on Thursday, in his final game knowing that a win and a slip from McIlroy could yet see him surprise and move into the round of 16.
