Dylan Frittelli put the South African flag on top of the leaderboard on Sunday as he blitzed his way around Harbour Town Golf Links with a stunning 62, writes WADE PRETORIUS.

The 2019 John Deere Classic winner came home in 29 – he birdied every hole on his inward nine except for 10, 13 and 16 – to set the score at -17. He was joined late on by Justin Thomas, who had two holes still to play when inclement weather struck at Hilton Head.

It will complicate Frittelli’s travel plans even if he says he will head home with so many golfers within two or three of his lead.

‘I felt like everything was pretty much a tap-in,’ he said on Sunday.

‘I guess the major thing I was struggling with last week was just the mental side. Not having played competitive golf, going out there and being able to execute a tough shot. The little gremlins that get in your head, they seemed to be miles away from me today.’

Frittelli, who was speaking before the big rains blew in, didn’t believe his tally would last.’I think, if anything, it’s going to give those guys confidence,’ said Frittelli.

‘The course setup is not very tough today. With the top players in the world playing here, there’s going to be someone that’s going to shoot four or five under. I’m going to go home and pack my bags … I’ll probably be sipping something cold by the time they’re finishing.’

Christiaan Bezuidenhout finished at -13 after a 67.

Ernie Els, who finished at -10 for the week, is predicting a shootout.

‘Yeah, the flags are on Sunday positions,’ Els said, ‘but there’s no wind, very humid. So it means the greens are soft, very receptive. … I think it’s going to be a nice shootout. I think the leader can shoot a six-, seven-under-par round today if he plays properly.’
