Dean Burmester is looking forward to a good night’s rest after opening with a 67 at the Shenzhen International in China, writes WADE PRETORIUS.

Burmester, who began his round on the 10th, turned in 33 and made birdies on 1 and 2 to move into a share of the lead with two-time Masters winner Bubba Watson, before a bogey at the seventh hampered his progress.

The 27-year-old finished with a birdie to share second place with countrymen Haydn Porteous, Frenchman Gregory Bourdy, German Maximilian Kieffer and Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee.

‘Yeah, obviously I had a good day and shot five under,’ the Tshwane Open winner told Compleat Golfer.

‘I made one bogey and it came from a lapse of concentration. It was just a silly three putt, which cost me a shot. But I am happy to have shot 67, a really nice opening round.’

‘I’m only one behind Bubba Watson, so three more rounds like today will be great.’

Burmester has an afternoon tee-off time on Friday, and he’s looking forward to starting strong and continuing to add birdies to his overnight score of -5.
