Bryson Dechambeau’s powerful hitting finally paid dividend as he stormed to a three-shot victory at the Rocket Mortgage Classic on Sunday.

The 26-year-old American finished strongly with a brilliant final-round 65 – a winning score of 23 under par and a sixth career win on the PGA Tour.

Dechambeau was quick out of the blocks with three birdies on his opening four holes, adding two more before eventually making a bogey on the 14th at the Detroit Golf Club.

But, he proved his worth in some style by concluding his week with three consecutive birdies on the 16th, 17th and 18th to finish three strokes ahead of Matthew Wolff, who held the lead heading into Sunday’s fourth round.

Dechambeau, whose new-found strength has been making headlines since the resumption of the PGA Tour, admits his bulking up has made a big difference in recent weeks.

‘It’s a little emotional for me. Because I did do something a little different – I changed my body, I changed my mindset in the game, and was able to accomplish a win while playing a completely different style of golf,’ he explained.

‘I love that everybody is voicing their opinion. And they deserve to do so. I’ve shown people that there’s another way to do it.’

Fellow American Kevin Kisner managed to finish in third spot on 18 under par, while English pair Danny Willet and Tyrrell Hatton, as well as Canadian Adam Hadwin, finished a further two shots back in T4.
