Johnson produced a bogey-free back nine of 33 to move within a shot of the lead after being two back after the opening round. He will start on Saturday in the group sharing sixth with countrymen Tiger Woods and Xander Schauffele, with Justin Harding the surprise name joining the closest chasers.

The South African, a recent five-time winner across the Sunshine, Asian and European Tours, will play alongside Schauffele, a former PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year, who fired the low round of day (65), at 8:15pm SA time.

Ten minutes later, Oosthuizen and Johnson – both one-time Major winners – will start their third lap around Augusta National before Brooks Koepka and Adam Scott get under way.

The final group sees Open Champion Francesco Molinari and Jason Day, continuing to battle through injury this week, off at 8:45pm.

The third round will no doubt be watched closely by Presidents Cup captain Ernie Els, who will be interested to see how Branden Grace and Argetina’s Emiliano Grillo fare in the second group of the day.

At 4:25pm, one of Els’ vice-captains, Trevor Immelman, will play alongside key player for Melbourne this year, Hideki Matsuyama.
