South African golfing legend Gary Player has come out in support of the vote that will allow women to join Muirfield as members.

On Tuesday, the club members voted in favour of a resolution to allow females to join the club as members, after a vote on the same matter did not achieve a two-thirds majority in 2016.

The move has seen the R & A immediately add Muirfield back on to the rotation of venues to host the oldest of golf’s four majors.

‘Well done to the members of Muirfield. Making golf a progressive sport, accessible to all the world, is crucial to our future,’ Player tweeted after the news.

Black Knight International, the global company that represents the golf legend, tweeted: ‘Muirfield is back in The Open rota! After 273 years the club finally voted to admit female members. About time!’

Player won three Open Championships, with his first coming at Muirfield in 1959.
