Branden Grace will be an early starter on Friday as he looks to work his way up the field at the 101st PGA Championship at Bethpage Black in New York.
The multiple European Tour winner is one of three South Africans off in the morning, but that number doubles when it comes to players in danger of missing the weekend mark.
Grace will start on the first tee – he opened with a double on Thursday off the 10th – in the day’s third grouping, with Brandon Stone (+9) and Dylan Frittelli (+7) also morning starters.
It’ll be a late night for local fans as they follow the progress of Louis Oosthuizen and Erik van Rooyen, both of whom opened with steady level-par rounds.
Van Rooyen will look to latch on to the momentum of Tommy Fleetwood, who is one of the few within five of leader Brooks Koepka. The Englishman, chasing his first Major, and Shane Lowry accompany the in-form South African on the tee shortly before 7pm SA time.
Oosthuizen is off two groups later with Americans Charley Hoffman and Patrick Reed.
Shortly after the flurry of South Africans is the marquee group of Koepka, Tiger Woods and Francesco Molinari. The defending champion blew his playing partners away on Thursday, with the pair ending nine shots adrift.
