Justin Walters opened his account at the Hero Open with a brilliant six-under-par 66 during Thursday’s opening round in Birmingham.

The second event of the ‘UK swing’ got underway at the Arden Marriott Hotel and Country Club and Walters led the South African charge that saw him finish the day in T6, four shots behind leader Sebastian Garcia Rodriguez.

The 39-year-old Walters rolled in seven birdies, while dropping one unfortunate shot on the ninth hole.

After a brilliant performance at last week’s British Masters, Justin Harding continued with a solid opening-round 70 to finish the first round on two under.

Compleat Golfer’s playing editor Brandon Stone, Haydn Porteous and Zander Lombard started their week with a one over par, while Louis de Jager is a further stroke back.

Dean Burmester struggled to get his opening round going and in the end had to settle for a disappointing three over, while Bryce Easton carded a four-over 75 to start with.
