Oosthuizen was on track to keep the crystal trophy in South Africa, after having watched Branden Grace end the drought for a local winner at the Gary Player Country Club, as he overturned a two-shot deficit to Sergio Garcia heading into the final round into a two-shot lead thanks to birdies at the 9th, 10th and 11th.

As many as 20,000 fans roared with each passing hole but were left silenced by Lee Westwood, who fired a flawless 64, as Oosthuizen faltered with bogeys at 12 and a three-putt bogey at 15 to fall back. The much-loved South African then found trouble down the right off 18 as he surrendered second place to Garcia, with the Englishman bagging his third win at the event by three strokes.

2019 is set to be a bumper edition, in what is also the 40th anniversary of Sun City and the Gary Player Country Club, with fans now excitedly looking forward to watching Oosthuizen attempt to right the wrongs of his narrow defeat when ‘Africa’s Major’ tees off on 14 November.
