    Olesen is facing serious charges

Thorbjorn Olesen will spend time off the course after the European Tour confirmed his suspension following charges of sexual assault, being drunk on an aircraft and common assault.

The Danish golf star, a member of the 2019 European Ryder Cup team and a five-time winner on the European Tour, will appear in court in London on 21 August and will not play competitively until the legal proceedings have run their course.

‘Thorbjorn Olesen has been suspended from the European Tour pending the outcome of legal proceedings,’ a tour spokesperson said.

‘As this remains an ongoing legal matter, we are unable to make any further comment at this time.’

Olesen was arrested when his plane from Memphis following the St Jude Invitational landed at Heathrow.

‘A man has been charged in connection with an incident on an inbound flight to Heathrow Airport on Monday, July 29,’ read a statement from the Metropolitan Police.

‘Jacob Thorbjorn Olesen, 29, of Redcliffe Road, Kensington and Chelsea, was charged by postal requisition on Thursday, August 1 with sexual assault, being drunk on an aircraft and common assault.

‘He is due to appear at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, August 21.’

Olesen’s camp released the following statement: ‘Thorbjorn has cooperated fully with the police during their investigation, but while the legal proceedings are still ongoing he unfortunately cannot comment on this matter at this time.’

According to reports in English tabloids, the 29-year-old allegedly sexually assaulted a sleeping woman, urinated in the aisle and was abusive towards the cabin crew.

Fellow player Ian Poulter was on the flight and reportedly attempted to calm Olesen down.
