If the 2020 Masters Tournament is to be played, it would appear from speculation that the date might be sometime in October. Trevor Immelman has insight into conditions …

The 2008 Masters winner has reportedly played Augusta National 20 times in October and thus is one of the leading voices when it comes to imagining what the course could look and feel like.

With Covid-19 forcing the shutdown of the global golf calendar, talk has shifted to proposing a new date for the year’s ‘first’ Major.

‘In the spring, all the colour is popping and it’s very lush,’ said the South African.

‘Now, in the fall, you’ve got great colour, too. It’s just different colours. You have that fall orangey, reddish thing going. But it’s still breathtaking.’

He also offered an opinion on what a later Masters might do for the golfing community.

‘We’ve become so accustomed to the fact that the Masters signals the fact the major season is starting, it’s spring time for most of America. It signals that we’ve come through a long winter and those who had been locked in by winter are feeling the warmth of spring,’ he said.

‘If the Masters is played in the fall, it would feel a little different. But the world is going through such a tough time right now, and everybody is so unsure how the next little while will pan out. At some point, when we do feel we have the ability to be able to go back out there and start our normal lives, hopefully with as minimal and little damage as possible, I think sports and arts and entertainment are going to be such a huge part of our signalling to ourselves that we’ve made it through this and we can start celebrating those things once again.

‘The Masters and all the great events in sports would be so inspirational for us to start building backup.’
