Hovland makes move at Torrey Pines
    Viktor Hovland

Viktor Hovland has moved to the top of the Farmers Insurance Open leaderboard after a solid second-round performance on Friday.

The Norwegian was in red-hot form and rolled in eight birdies across his 18 holes, while dropping only one shot to sign off for a superb 65 at Torrey Pines.

It was enough for Hovland to reach the halfway mark of the event on nine under par, holding a one-shot lead over Jon Rahm and a host of other players.

The Spaniard is one of six players on eight under par after the second round’s action, all firmly in the hunt for a big weekend in San Diego.

It was another slow day out for the four South Africans competing at the event, with Erik van Rooyen unfortunately missing the cut on Friday.

He only managed to settle on one over par, which wasn’t enough after the cut was set on even par.

Charl Schwartzel went even for his second round to remain on two under par for the week, while Dylan Frittelli and Louis Oosthuizen are both on one under.
