Dylan Frittelli has moved within one shot of the lead following a spectacular second-round 65 at the Zozo Championship on Friday.

The South African will head into the weekend’s action on 13 under par and one stroke behind leader Justin Thomas as the heat is turning on at the Sherwood Country Club in California.

Frittelli went flag hunting on Friday and was pretty accurate in his quest with eight birdies in his round, five of which came on the back nine, while dropping a single shot on the final hole to end the day in T2.

After opening his week with a 66 on Thursday, the 30-year-old was able to surge even further up the leaderboard and will fancy his chances over the next two rounds in search of a second PGA Tour title.

Thomas, though, will be just as determined to convert his lead with moving day set to provide more fireworks.

The 2017 FedEx Cup champion shot a consecutive round of 65 on Friday but will no doubt be looking over his shoulder at Frittelli and Lanto Griffin hot on his heels, while Patrick Cantlay and Scottie Scheffler are a further stroke behind on 12 under.

Defending champion Tiger Woods managed to rectify his horrible opening round by shooting a six-under-par 66 on Friday to move up to two under for the week.

Shaun Norris, the only other South African in the field, will head into Saturday’s third round on three under par and in T61.
