World No 1 Dustin Johnson and defending champion Justin Thomas will play together in a featured group during the opening round of the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

A star-studded field will take on the challenging Plantation Course at Kapalua from Thursday, in what promises to be a frantic start to a new golfing year.

Fresh off a highly successful 2020, Johnson is favoured to come out on top in Hawaii on Sunday and will no doubt be a tough competitor on the PGA Tour again this year.

Hoping to build on his significant lead at the top of the FedEx Cup standings, Johnson, though, will have to handle the challenge of Thomas first up.

Thomas also enjoyed a good year on Tour and started the new season with three top-10 finishes so far, eyeing further success throughout 2021.

Xander Schauffele and Jon Rahm will highlight the second featured group on Thursday, with lots at stake for the American.

Schauffele came up short at the event last year when he lost in a playoff to Thomas, while Rahm is chasing further success on American soil.

The Spaniard will start the week with a fresh set of clubs, having signed a new deal with Callaway Golf, hoping to kickstart the year with a bang.

The 24-year-old Scottie Scheffler has been paired with 2020 PGA Championship winner Collin Morikawa for the start of the Tournament of Champions.

Scheffler’s growth over the past 12 months has been spectacular and he could be set for a breakthrough season on Tour. Morikawa, on the other hand, will be hoping to build on his enormous success of the past two years. A decent showing in Hawaii will be the perfect way for the youngster to get the ball rolling.

Patrick Reed and Sebastian Munoz will complete the final featured group for Thursday’s action. Reed narrowly lost out on a Race to Dubai victory, while the Columbian is striving for further development by going up against the best in the business.

The groups and field will be reshuffled after the opening round based on scores.
