Geoff Ogilvy wants independance but Stewart Cink doesn’t see any issues … the way forward for the Presidents Cup is dividing golf stars.
The PGA Tour has owned and operated the Presidents Cup since it launched in 1994, and it also runs both teams. That includes selecting captains and host sites, funding, marketing, and ticket sales for each side.
Ogilvy made the case for more independence from the PGA Tour, stating, “I’m not very well-schooled in corporate structure, but it would be advantageous to the event, I think, to get a little bit more separation between the two teams.”
It’s also the reason Ogilvy couldn’t pick any LIV Golf players unlike the Ryder Cup.
“I think, well, it’s successful,” Cink argues.
“It’s a PGA Tour property and it’s a successful property. It does well and it’s popular. It’s good television, and the players get up for it. So, in that sense, it’s a good competition.
“I think the PGA Tour probably would like for the international team to get a win. Nobody has ever said that, but I think that’s the sentiment. So, it almost gives the American players even more bulletin board material to win that.”
With the US overwhelming favourites across every metric, Cink believes his country have a lot to play for,
“You’re representing America, and you’re fighting for the guys that are right beside you, the caddies, the wives and girlfriends, everybody who is part of the team,” he adds.
“No one wants to lose. No one wants to lose the Ryder Cup. No one wants to lose the Presidents Cup.
“There’s a lot at stake, and a lot of pride. It only happens every two years, so it’s not like you get a chance to do it again next week, like we are typically accustomed to. You know, you lose a tournament, you have the lead here going into the 17, and you lose. It stinks, and it hurts. But you tee it up again the next week, and you’ve got to write a new chapter.
“In the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup, it’s not like that.”
