Patrick Cantlay and Rory McIlroy have taken a share of the lead at the BMW Championship on Friday after both players concluded the second round on one under par.

The Olympia Fields course in Illinois continued to challenge players throughout the day and, with testing conditions, it was no surprise that Cantlay and McIlroy were the only players to finish in the red after two rounds of play.

The American shot a two-under-par 68 in his Friday showing comprising an eagle, four birdies, two bogeys and one nasty double-bogey on the 16th hole.

McIlroy’s second round was also somewhat of a roller-coaster as he settled for a one-under-par 69 in a display that yielded five birdies and four bogeys.

The pair will start Saturday’s moving day with a one-shot lead ahead of overnight leader Hideki Matsuyama and current world No 1 Dustin Johnson, who are both even par after two rounds.

South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen is a further stroke behind on one over for the event, and will start the third round in T5 alongside Adam Scott, Brendon Todd, Tony Finau and Billy Horschel.

Oosthuizen managed a rare bogey-free round on Friday, while a single birdie on the 15th hole provided him with a concluding one-under 69.

Countryman Dylan Frittelli, however, suffered a disappointing day –he shot a five-over-par 75 dropping him down to seven over for the competition.
