• Blaauw, Fisher Jnr eye Sibaya success

    Jacques Blaauw
    Eyes on the prize

The Sunshine Tour moves closer to the city of Durban down the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal this week for the final event in the Sun International golf series – the Sibaya Challenge in partnership with Coca Cola Beverages South Africa at the Woods at Mount Edgecombe.

Louis de Jager carded a final round five-under 65 for a total 13-under-par 197 to win last season’s event in Umhlanga for his fourth career win on the Sunshine Tour, although he will not be defending his title in 2019.

That leaves the door open for a field with Jacques Blaauw finding form after two top 10s to his name on this current Kwa Zulu-Natal stretch. It’s a run reminiscent of his 2013 season where he won three times. Since that purple patch, he won again in 2014 and his last victory, in 2016, was at Sishen.

With two third-place finishes this season – the season opener in Zambia at the Mopani Redpath Zambia Open and the tournament at Selborne last week – he seems close to what would be his sixth Sunshine Tour title.

Trevor Fisher Jnr is chasing win No 10 on the Sunshine Tour after playing his way back after an injury-induced absence from the game.

He had a good week at Selborne, with a second-round 66 putting him right into contention, and his final round of one-under 71 having him finish in a share of seventh.

He has one other recent top 10 to his name – he was 10th in the Vodacom Origins of Golf event at Sishen in August.
