Former Western Province and Lions rugby player Earl Rose will have to wait a little longer for his day in court after a brief appearance on a theft charge on Monday.

Rose, a Springbok tourer, is at the centre of a theft case after a couple were caught on camera at Stellenbosch Golf Club purportedly making off with a driver and a putter.

That video went viral with speculation at the time suggesting it was Rose and an unidentified woman.

The clubs were since returned, albeit with the driver mangled with no shaft. SGC GM Chris van der Merwe told News24 that security identified the driver who dropped off the clubs as ‘the same person he saw [the day before]’. The man claimed he ‘picked it up’ and wanted to return it.

Rose then handed himself over on Saturday before being released on bail.

On Monday, the 35-year-old appeared in the Stellenbosch Magistrates Court, with the matter postponed to 18 February.
