Els switches to prototype of Adams XTD irons

Recently signed Adams Golf staff player Ernie Els is using a prototype version of the Adams XTD irons in this week’s Northern Trust Open.

The XTDs are best described as game-improvement irons, and are poles apart from the Callaway Razr X musclebacks Ernie used under Callaway.

The irons have composite heads made up of 450 stainless-steel faces and 17-4 stainless-steel cast bodies, the two components connected with Adams’ ‘Cross Cavity’, which moves the centre of gravity of the clubs more toward the back for increased forgiveness. A ‘Pressure Piston’ is lodged between the faces and cross-cavities for an improved sound and sensation on impact.

Els’ clubs are slightly different from the retail XTD irons, in that they’re a tenth smaller, have a little less offset, and are milled from 17-4 stainless steel, but the technology remains the same.

Mike Fox, director of global product marketing for Adams, said that feedback from the likes of Els helps the company design new clubs. As it stands, only the big man can play with the prototypes. But they will more than likely be on offer to the public soon.
