Steve Surry didn’t mind a few waits on tees during his first two rounds of a pair of three-under-par 69s in the Vodacom Origins of Golf final at Pinnacle Point.

Of course, he also hopes to register his maiden win on the Sunshine Tour during his seventh season of visiting South Africa from England to play on the Sunshine Tour.

‘It is my first time playing Pinnacle Point,’ he said. ‘There are a couple of guys back home I know who played here and they told me about the stunning views and stuff and it’s lived up to expectations.’

Surry was happy to have bounced back after starting his first round on the back foot.

‘I am quite pleased even though I made two bogeys in my first three holes. It could have been a long day. So, I was happy with the fightback.’

His second round was more complicated, with the wind getting progressively stronger throughout. So just two bogeys in his effort in trying conditions was impressive and took him to the top of the leaderboard ahead of the conclusion of the second day’s play.

‘Not much time to take in the views this time,’ he laughed. ‘There was too much going on with the wind.’

He currently lies 44th on the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit, which is the best he’s been since he started playing on the South African circuit back in 2012. His best season came in 2013 when he finished 58th.

He has finished runner-up three times on the Sunshine Tour, with his last one coming in the 2015 Lion of Africa Cape Town Open. This season, he finished in a share of fifth in the Old Mutual Zimbabwe Open for his best performance in nine starts so far.
