Brooks Koepka’s winning start to the Ryder Cup was marred by his errant tee shot that left a fan bleeding from the face.

Koepka and Tony Finau never led all day but a par on the last was enough to beat Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas 1UP as Team USA opened up a 3-1 first session lead.

‘You feel terrible for them,’ Koepka said, who confirmed that he did shout the traditional golf warning ‘fore’.

‘You know exactly how they are feeling, especially when you’ve got to go over there and apologise, because they are in pain, usually bleeding, and then to hit her in the face is not — you don’t want to hit anybody in the face, especially not a woman, and it’s not a good feeling.

‘I haven’t gotten an update,’ said Koepka later on Friday.

‘I actually just asked in the locker room, and nobody knew.’

The ball struck the fan above the eye and left the three-time Major champion shaken.
