Test your golfing knowledge with12 tough questions about this week’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

There’s a special week on the calendar every October, when some of the world’s top golfers rub shoulders with celebrity amateur players on three of Scotland’s finest courses.

It’s the week when the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship swings into view, an officially sanctioned event on the European Tour. England cricket star Kevin Pietersen is just one of those amateurs who can’t wait for the invitation to arrive in the post. Yes, by post, in an envelope, not sent by email.

‘The event is unique,’ says Pietersen. ‘You are allowed into the professionals’ arena and you are playing with them. It’s incredibly special. I understand what professionals are like when they are in the zone. I think it’s wonderful how they let amateurs like me into their space. If I were playing at Lord’s, the MCG or in Sydney, I wouldn’t want them batting alongside me.’

Many cricketers have competed at the event, and the likes of Shane Warne, Ian Botham, Michael Vaughan, Jacques Kallis and Mark Boucher are regular faces.

‘We are all mates,’ says Pietersen. ‘There is no rivalry between us during the week. Last year all the cricketers threw in £200 a head and the winner took the pot. That’s the nearest I get to being competitive there.’

The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship is played over the St Andrews Old Course, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns, which Pietersen says is his favourite of the three.

‘It’s beautiful, picturesque, and reminds me of The National in Australia. Of course, everyone loves the atmosphere and the history of St Andrews. It’s one of the very special sporting weeks of the year. I just enjoy being part of the event and playing there.’
