Australian Steve Elkington got exactly what he deserved after calling out Rory McIlroy, following his missed cut at the US Open.

The one-time Major winner, now 54, picked a fight with McIlroy on social media after the Northern Irishman missed the cut on Friday, but has widely been considered the loser after the 28-year-old’s sharp replies.

‘Rory is so bored playiing golf…without Tiger the threshold is prolly 4 majors with 100mill in bank,’ tweeted Elkington, who won the 1995 PGA Championship in a playoff against Colin Montgomerie.

McIlroy did not take kindly to the comment, and probably still smarting from his exit at Erin Hills, replied:

Not knowing when he’s been schooled, Elkington poked back.

‘New you were a money guy Jack won 18 and never mentioned his total cash.. It was 5 mill’ wrote the Australian.

Elkington was insistent on having the final say but it did little to add to the ‘debate’.
