COTM February - Wedgewood Golf Club

    Wedgewood Golf Club
has a long and rich history
of golf, legendary visitors
and championships. Of the championships, the General Motors Open and Invitational – which ran from 1966 to 1975 on the old Wedgewood layout – was the most prestigious, and the original honours board still hangs proudly in the new clubhouse, displaying names such as Gary Player, Harold Henning and Hugh Baiocchi.

Redesigned and constructed by Golf Data towards the end of 2013, the ‘new’ Wedgewood golf course has managed to maintain its charm, playability and many recognisable features on this interesting piece of land in Port Elizabeth.

The golf course is not long by modern standards, measuring just under 6 000 metres, but it remains an enjoyable and challenging layout (especially when the notorious PE winds blow) and it always leaves you wanting more.

The large, quick and undulating bentgrass greens pose a challenge to all levels of golfer, making course management paramount. The new layout incorporates the Wedgewood residential estate and is designed to make the course accessible without encroaching on it.

The intimate and tasteful country-style clubhouse was designed to be cost effective by reusing already available materials. Alien blue gums, removed from the golf course, were turned into the beautiful wooden-clad ceiling and outdoor pergola. Oregon pine roof trusses, from the old clubhouse, were reconditioned into furniture for the locker room and mantlepiece. Stone from an on-site quarry was used as cladding and a feature wall by local craftsmen.

The building is kept cool in summer by using flow of air with our large stacker doors, and warm in winter with two large fireplaces burning alien wood from site in order to keep to our philosophy of up-cycling while still creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

We are very much a family-orientated club and encourage all visitors to enjoy our clubhouse, excellent restaurant and facilities – even if you’re not playing a round.

The properties are typically country-style and for the lifestyle you’re buying into, are very fairly priced. If you haven’t yet experienced the new layout, pencil us in on your next visit to the Friendly City.
